History: 

Calliope was born in the ocean but was raised on the surface world. You see Calliope's mother was a merrow and her father, a human. Since long ago, humans and merfolks have been mortal enemies. Why? Well it all started when the humans began hunting and killing merfolks, for they believed that mermaids had magical powers and wanted to take hold of their magic for their own personal gain. The merfolks didn't retaliate at first but eventually they grew tired of hiding and started to fight back. The mermaids began killing sailors that ventured too far into their territory by luring them to their doom with their hypnotic singing. Any sailor that managed to survive or snap out of the trance were killed by the mermans.... But not all merfolk hated humans and not all humans hated merfolks. Her mother and father are a prime example of this. They loved each other dearly, even though it was forbidden. The bond between them grew stronger till, a union that soon proved fruitful. Marguerite bore fruit to a little baby girl and both Marguerite and Dmitri were overjoyed to welcome their child into the world. However their happiness would be short lived. A few months later, when Calliope was only 5 months old, the truth came out. When the elders of Marguerite's clan found out that she had married a human and had a child with him, she was sentenced to death for betraying her species. However, they offered her a proposition. If she was to tell them the name of the human and child, they would kill them instead and it would be like none of this ever happened. She bravely refused and told them she would rather die then let them harm her loving husband and precious child. Shortly after... the young mermaid was executed. 

Dmitri grew worried of course. Marguerite hadn't resurfaced in about two weeks for her usual visits. He found out about her execution a few days later when a trusted sea lion friend of Marguerite's delivered to him a note that Marguerite had written before her execution. In the note Marguerite explained why she stopped visiting all of a sudden, she explained that the elders and other merfolks were onto her and she didn't want to lead them right to her family. She also wrote that Dmitri should move as far away from the ocean as possible because the merfolk will search for them and she doesn't want anything to happen to her family. She also asked her husband to forgive her and wrote that she will always love him and asked him to take good care of their little girl. Dmitri was pained by the sudden revelation that he lost his wife, his love, the mother of his child... Hugging his daughter close to his chest and trembling in place, he promised his late wife he would let no harm come to Calliope. The man then broke down in heavy sobs, holding on tightly to his daughter as if making sure that she was still with him, that he hadn't lost her as well. As requested by Marguerite, Dmitri made sure they moved as far away as possible from the ocean. He decided to settle down in the countryside. It was perfectly located, not too far away from the nearest town and a great distance away from the ocean. And the fields nearby were perfect for growing grapes, flowers and keeping livestock. It would be safe for Calliope, no one was going to hurt her, he would make sure of that. He was going to protect her with his life, feeling guilty and responsible for the death of his wife, he vowed he would be there for his daughter.

So yes, Calliope was raised on the surface world like any other ordinary human. She was quite an imaginative and creative little girl, often spending time reading adventure books, making flower crowns, swimming in the nearby river or writing poetry. And when she wasn't reading or exploring the vast world around her, she was helping her father out with the farm work by taking care of the flowers, picking the grapes when they were ripe and milking the goats. She was also very curious of the world around her, often relentlessly asking her father various questions about this and that. But what really seemed to pique her interest were the stories of all the gods and goddesses. One story however stood out to her and never ceased to amaze her, and that was the story of the winged boy that defeated the underworld army all by himself and saved the surface world and skyworld. She thought the boy in this story was incredibly brave to do that and wanted to meet him so badly, though she knew it was impossible for this winged hero lived in skyworld among with the goddess of light. Little did she know, she would meet him one day by mere chance.

Extra:

-The necklace was a gift from her mother. She never takes it off.

-She loves the ocean but at the same time fears it, knowing full well the dangers that lurk underneath the waves.

-Calliope's father dabbled in many professions before, after all Dmitri's father taught him various things.
